Gate of the Kittens

A Novella by Wilanne Schneider Belden

The last of the Witch World Saga stories.

Edition Used for Analysis:
[Catfantastic] (1989) Edited by Andre Norton & Martin H. Greenberg, Published by DAW, PB, 0-886-77355-5, No.785, UE2355, $3.95, 320pg ~ cover by Braldt Bralds  ~~ Note: Catfantastic is not a Witch World title.

Synopsis:

We all know that there are gates between the worlds. An arch of stone that can bring someone from the everyday world to a world of their dreams. In the Witch World the Master tests his ability to bring a weapon into his world, by tossing a small cat through to our world.

Luckily for Feathers, as that was the cats name, Librarians are kind hearted, and Feathers is rescued and taken aboard a Bookmobile. And on the snowy road up and down the mountain the Bookmobile is mistaken for the weapon, and pulled to the gate.

Timeline Points:

  1. p25-26. 'The man was big and bearded and about her [Judy's] age, and he was dressed as nobody dressed where she came from, nor had for several hundred years, and he smelled distinctly of horse and sweat, but he reached out to help her to her feet, shook her hand in a perfectly normal manner, and greeted her in English. "The name's Tregarth," he said. "Call me Simon. It's a well-known name here, though I'm by no means the first to wear it."1

Footnotes:
1. This appears to be a grandson of Simon Tregarth who can speak English. This may be Kaththea & Hilarion's son mentioned in Songsmith, a possible 3rd child of Kyllan & Dauhaun, or possibly even a child of Kemoc & Orsya.
