Biographical History

Alice Mary Norton (1912-2005) was an award-winning American science fiction and fantasy author, poet and editor.

Born and educated in Cleveland, Ohio, she began writing and editing at a young age, producing her first novel (which became her second published book) while still in high school. She attended Western Reserve University, although she never graduated due to finances. She worked as assistant librarian and children's librarian at the Cleveland Public Libraries from 1932-1950, working in 38 of their 40 branches, with a brief interruption during World War II to work at the Library of Congress. She left the Cleveland Public Libraries in 1950 to be a reader for Gnome Press, a science fiction publishing house in Hicksville, Long Island, but by 1958 she had published 23 novels and several short stories, and felt confident enough to devote her full time to freelance writing.

Although best known as a science fiction writer under the pseudonym Andre Norton (her other pen name is Andrew North), she has also written mystery, fantasy, historical novels, and westerns. Ms. Norton wrote more than 130 novels, nearly one hundred short stories, and edited numerous anthologies in the science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, and western genres, and her work has been translated into eight languages, including Arabic. She was the first woman to be a Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) Grand Master and to be inducted in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. She received Skylark, Balrog, and World Fantasy awards, and was the first woman to win the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy award. She was a member of the Women's National Book Association, Theta Sigma Phi, and encouraged beginning writers with "High Hallack," a retreat and research library for writers which she opened and ran from 1999-2004. The SFWA named an award in her honor, the Andre Norton Award for young adult novels, first given in 2006.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Alice Mary Norton Papers consist of two accessions which have not been integrated. There are also a small number of unprocessed additions not reflected in this inventory.

Accession I, acquired in the early 1970s, consists of incoming correspondence, writings, and printed material, including books and fanzines. Inclusive dates of the material are 1962-1969, with bulk dates of 1967-1969. The material is arranged in three groups.

Correspondence consists of incoming letters, arranged alphabetically by surname of correspondent. Within each name, letters are arranged chronologically.

Writings constitute the bulk of the collection and includes manuscripts and printed material, arranged alphabetically by title with all stages of a work arranged together in order of creation. There is generally only one draft of a manuscript, usually a revised typescript. Title entries on the shelf list are the published titles. If the book has not been published, the shelf list title is that of the last draft. Titles of drafts and foreign editions are given if they are different from the main entry. The date given for the manuscript is one of three; in descending order of preferences, it is either 1) composition 2) copyright or 3) publication. The number of folders is indicated by a number in parentheses following the entry.

Published material includes printed copies of Ms. Norton's books, the manuscripts of which are not in the collection, and fanzines subscribed to by Ms. Norton. Books are arranged alphabetically by title with publication information given. Fanzines are arranged alphabetically by title and chronologically within each title.

Accession II, acquired ca. 1978, consists of correspondence, memorabilia, published material, and writings.

Correspondence contains mostly fan mail but also some correspondence from other authors and publishers including John Jakes, Forrest J. Ackerman, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula K. LeGuin, and Isaac Asimov. Memorabilia consists of one book jacket and one business card. Published material contains the galley of a book by Jane Louise Curry and a pamphlet relating to science fiction.

The bulk of this accession is Writings, which contains foreign language editions of several books as well as galleys, proofs, and typescripts for more than 30 of Ms. Norton's books.

Arrangement of the Collection

Correspondence in accession I is separated into general correspondence and correspondence from authors/publishers; within each subseries it is arranged chronologically. Correspondence in accession II is arranged alphabetically by correspondent. In both accessions, Published material and Writings are arranged alphabetically by type and, within that, alphabetically by title.

Biographical Note
Andre Norton (Alice Mary Norton) was born February 7, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio.  After an early career as a children’s librarian, Andre Norton turned to full-time writing as her profession, publishing her first novel in 1934.  She legally changed her name to “Andre Norton” believing that readers of science fiction and fantasy would accept that name better than “Alice Mary Norton.”
Her first science fiction novel, Star Man’s Son, was a great success, launching her into the science fiction and fantasy genre, where she has achieved the most favorable response, although her other novels are also well regarded.  She has published over 100 novels, many of which are in series.  “The Witch World” series is her most popular body of work, now numbering over 30 books.
Andre Norton is highly regarded in the science fiction and fantasy community.  She has won numerous awards, including the Phoenix Award for overall achievement in science fiction, the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy Award in 197 for lifetime achievement, The Nebula Grand Master Award of the SFWA in 1974, for lifetime achievement, the Jules Verne Award in 1984, and a Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention in 1998.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of a small assemblage of Andre Norton’s later manuscripts, her review compilations, her portrait, science fiction art works, and related material.

Biographical Note

Andre Norton ( Alice Mary Norton) was born February 7, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio. After an early career as a children’s librarian, Andre Norton turned to full-time writing as her profession, publishing her first novel in 1934. She legally changed her name to "Andre Norton" believing that readers of science fiction and fantasy would accept that name better than "Alice Mary Norton."

Her first science fiction novel, Star Man’s Son, was a great success, launching her into the science fiction and fantasy genre, where she has achieved the most favorable response, although her other novels are also well regarded. She has published over 100 novels, many of which are in series. "The Witch World" series is her most popular body of work, now numbering over 30 books.

Andre Norton is highly regarded in the science fiction and fantasy community. She has won numerous awards, including the Phoenix Award for overall achievement in science fiction, the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy Award in 1977 for lifetime achievement, The Nebula Grand Master Award of the SFWA in 1974, for lifetime achievement, the Jules Verne Award in 1984, and a Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention in 1998.

 Unpublished Items

attributed to Andre Norton

Over the years I have been on a quest to identify items written by Andre that have yet to be published. In the past people were reluctant to discuss what they held due to the legal battles that the estate and others were engaged in.
So now I am hoping that people will at least identify what they are holding, thus generating interest enough to get some of it published.

Of course if any person (in the interest of just being nice) wants to post any actual material here I will be more than glad to accommodate them.

The following is a list of items in the possession of Dr. Victor Horadam, a long time friend and fan of Andre's.
As of January 2015 the items below that are grayed out have been obtained and published on this site. Most of them appear in a book titled "Telling of Tales, The"

The words in quotations are either Andre's words, or those of Ingrid Zierhut when she was labeling these years ago.  The statements in parentheses are my best thoughts about what the item is. ~ Victor Horadam

1.  "Objective...Peking!" ~ (written while on Mannering Road, Cleveland), 5 chapters in 54 pages with plot outline for the rest of the story, not finished.  This is a WWII novel about guerrilla attacks against the Japanese.

2.  "Trouble in Mayapan - A Norreys Jewel Adventure" ~ 119 pages typed with 13 pages (7 leaves double sided) manuscript, I think this is the 4th "Sword" Novel, unfinished.

3.  "Destruction of America", 44 pages, unfinished novel.

4.  "A Tourist Guide to Haunted Houses and Unexplained Mysteries New England -- New York" ~ (written while living in Maitland, Florida), several pages to start this, and various outlines/ideas for the book.

5.  Notes to a Sequel to "Gates to Tomorrow" ~ called "Fear Sword!  Fear Spell!"

6.  Notes and first few pages to a "Solar Queen" ~ novel, unpublished and unfinished.

7.  Unfinished sequel to "Operation Time Search" ~ 26 pages, some of it duplicates.

8.  5 unpublished short stories:

1.  The Cat Who Used His Wits

2.  The Fat Troll

3.  The Hobyahs

4.  Strong Medicine

5.  Yankee Camels

 9.  Witch World story, 7 pages, unfinished, involving Falconers.

10.  "Unpublished stories worked into Witch World stories"

1.  "The Knights of the Fish"

2.  "Ring of Stones"

3.  "Ully the Piper" (I know this has been published, so I wonder about the other two).

11.  Outline for Children's Fantasy Book, "not written", involves multiple cat characters.

12.  "Legend of the Fairy Stone" ~ opening chapter of novel/short story - 4 pages.

13.  "Larridians" ~ 5 pages of outline of the story.

14.  "Who Dreams of Dragons" ~ short story, 34 pages written summer of 2003 for her friend Anne McCaffrey.

15.  "Adventure Story" ~ never finished, 10 pages.

16.  Space adventure story, never written, only the first 5 pages to start the story (no characters or setting I am familiar with).

17.  Sequel to "Follow the Drum" called "Stand to Your Arms", 4 page outline, never written.

18.  Short Story, "Fanus", from "Reed anthology, Fall-Winter 1985" ~ The title "Fanus" is listed in Andre's personal Blue Book of Titles, but appears to have never been published.

19.  Folder of notes with original concepts for the Witch World idea, story lines.

20.  Personal diaries of Andre Norton.

21.  Additional set of diaries, but not daily, these centered on the historic dates and what her thoughts/feelings were then (start and end of WWII, etc.).

22.  Note books, various.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following are works in the library at Syracuse University, and after a review of the material, these seem to be unaccounted for in the published material. I am not 100% sure (if anyone can clarify these, please do):
1.  "Death and the Gothic Lady" ~ 4 page outline for a sequel to "Snow Shadow".
2.  "Place By the Window" ~ 7 page short story.
If you know of anything that could also be listed, please contact me so we may discuss posting something about it. It seems only right to share unknown stuff with Andre's fans.
