An evaluation of Norton’s entire career and literary output. Current to Web of the Witch World in 1964, the essay contains significant biographical and bibliographical detail with interesting insights into the behind-the-scenes activity at Ace Books. Carter notes that her works have always contained strong fantasy elements and sees the fruition of this quality in the Witch World series, which he praises very highly. In addition, Carter points out that Norton has been a phenomenon in science fiction for three reasons: her works appeal to both juvenile and adult readers; she has rarely published in the genre's magazines; and despite her vivid prose, her entertaining and exciting narrative, and her imaginative invention, she has been largely ignored by serious reviewers; when she has been considered, her works have been largely underrated. However, Carter contends that she must be considered a major figure because of her undeniable skill in a variety of genres, her pioneering efforts in in the introduction of quality writing into the field of juvenile science fiction, and her place as a pivotal figure in the development of the interplanetary fantast sub-genre.

Recognizes the value of plot and character and the fact that technology and science are secondary elements in Norton’s fiction. Fisher correctly identities and explores the more significant themes and devices of the machines effect on mankind; intelligence in its many variations, potentials, and alien guises; the importance of animals, sensual imagery, and miscegenation, particularly in The Beast Master and its sequel Lord of Thunder; the optimism of new starts and orientations lot mankind on other worlds; the symbolic necessity of “earth magic" and an intuitive response to nature; and the quest for self.

An interesting fan publication that provides particular insight into Norton's attitudes toward her writing and the science fiction genre. In answer to a variety of questions, Norton indicates that she likes to alternate between writing science fiction and historical adventure; contends that the chief value of science fiction is the “what if...” questions it raises and that it is the “pure action relaxation” element of science fiction which is its primary relation to mainstream fiction; recommends Charles Fort’s books on folklore, magic, anthropology, and natural history to the beginning writer; argues that the greatest weakness of contemporary science fiction is self-conscious and pretentious writing; and identifies H. Rider Haggard, A. Merritt, Talbot Mundy, Dornford Yates, and wide and constant reading as the most significant elements in her development as a writer.
